The Atlantic, Brighton England. 33 shows, 11 countries, 1 day “off” to drive. Every show was great in its way. Thanks to the mighty Chris Metzler for putting it all together and being there every step of the way, to my new pal Sid Griffin, and to all of the promoters (true believers, every one), staff, sound guys and gals, hotel folks, service folks, the dude from Hertz in Manchester who took matters into his own hands and got us into the right vehicle and to anyone I have forgotten. Thanks most of all to my true friend Dan Stuart for giving me the opportunity to take it to the people. It was a joy to play alongside him every night, as well as solve the world’s problems every day while traveling the highways and byways. I am sitting on the runway at Heathrow, and literally cannot wait to get home to Deirdre. Con Safos—-Tom
The cutting board traveled with us from Germany... lots of sandwiches got made. The tuna traveled with Marlowe from Tucson... some lucky soul at The Old Ship gets it now.
Slightly faded, grand old hotel facing the sea in Brighton. Last actual night of the tour was spent here.
Marlowe and I are sharing a room at The Old Ship Hotel in Brighton. It’s a little tight, so we just erected the obligatory “buddy barrier”. Last show of the tour at The Prince Albert tonight.
Travelodge, Bedford. I would bet dollars to donuts that the folks behind Travelodge are also involved in the private prison industry. The endless gauntlet of locked corridors and fire doors are like prison style sally ports, when the 1/2 hour of shitty “free internet” runs out, it’s like running out of money in your commissary, and the parking lot is, of course, the “yard”.
Got into London with a few hours to spare on Wednesday. As soon as the stuff was in the hotel, I split on a walkabout. We were in Crouch End, North London, across the street from Konk Studios! I walked all the way up Tottenham Road, seeing a neighborhood that was clearly going through some pretty serious gentrification. I randomly walked into this guy’s barber shop and asked about getting my beard trimmed. We talked about traveling, and what it’s like yo be in a place for about 18 hrs and how you really don’t get to see that much etc. when he was done, I asked what I owed him, and he said “nothing mate, this one’s on the house”. I insisted but he simply would not take my money. Thanks Ersan Mustafa, you are a truly excellent dude.
Top floor... Bristol hotel. All the way up to the crow’s nest in one shot with two guitars and a suitcase big enough to hold Billy Barty’s corpse. Cracked my dome twice on the low ceiling going out the back door. Scared to go to sleep because of the concussion...
